The Educational Wounds: Understanding their impact on learning and relationships

What happens when our experiences of education leave us believing we are not “good enough”, and how might those experiences continue to shape the way we learn, teach, lead and relate to others?
This 90-minute seminar invites you to explore the lasting impact of educational experiences and the unconscious beliefs, relational patterns and survival strategies they can create. Together, we will consider the messages we may have absorbed about success, intelligence, behaviour, belonging and worth and how these messages can become embedded in the learning environments we create and participate in.
Drawing on Kirsten Olson’s work on educational wounds, alongside Transactional Analysis, we will explore what it means to create permission-rich learning environments that foster authenticity, curiosity, relational safety and growth.

Trauma as a Social Construct: If We All Held It, Would There Be Any Trauma Left?

Trauma is often treated as a private wound — something that happens to one person and must be repaired within that person. Drawing on ideas from relational psychoanalysis, social constructionism, and the concept of the social unconscious, this workshop asks what changes when we stop locating trauma solely within a single psyche and begin to recognise it as something distributed through our social relations, cultural expectations, and shared unconscious life — a socially embedded experience rather than an individual defect. If we overlook the social, relational, and cultural fields in which the trauma was generated, held, silenced, or transferred; then the suffering of the individual becomes a reflection of a wider disavowed social pain. I will suggest that therapy must still attend to the intrapsychic residues of trauma, while also accounting for how society itself holds, hides, and transmits distress. When responsibility for trauma becomes collective rather than private, new possibilities for accountability and repair emerge.
